Integrated Circuit Applications Engineer

Holt Integrated Circuits Inc. is a semiconductor company located in Orange County, California. Our company specializes in system-engineered integrated circuits used in aerospace and military hardware. Our high reliability devices are used by virtually all aircraft and related electronic subsystem industries. Holt has a long history of profitability and a strong balance sheet with plans that will continuously expand market opportunities.

Due to continued growth, Holt is currently seeking an Integrated Circuit Applications Engineer. The engineer will be responsible for supporting customer engineers, occasionally testing and debugging customer issues in Holt’s lab or in customer's lab, and supporting internal design, marketing and other application engineers by feedback of customer technical dialog.

An integral part of the IC product life cycle, this role supports numerous stages of the life cycle, including new design emulation, prototype and production test design and development of reference design evaluation kits to simplify customer design integration. Therefore, this role performs numerous and varied tasks requiring a diverse range of engineering skills.

The ideal candidate will be able to:

  1. Perform bench testing of Holt IC application development boards based on Holt IC reference designs. Ultimately, with sufficient experience, design such kits for new IC products.

  2. Understand the application of Holt IC devices; optimize Holt IC reference designs and demo programs, typically written in ANSI C language.

  3. Contribute to the writing of IC test specifications, notably in the areas of design verification and production test.

  4. Assist customer engineers who are designing Holt ICs into their products. Answer software questions. When requested, assist with installation and use of Holt reference design hardware and software.

  5. Be receptive to customer feedback that can lead to product improvement.

  6. Based on Holt's reference designs and demo programs, understand the coding of embedded C software that controls the IC.

  7. Use an IC data sheet to define test limits. Perform and document test results in an Excel spreadsheet. Report findings in a form usable by all concerned parties, such as test reports for internal use, or summarized test reports for customers.

  8. Take an IC data sheet and define verification methods using simulation or hardware testing to create test stimulus and expected response files.

  9. Analyze failed devices returned from the field. Recommend test improvements to improve test coverage.

  10. Perform schematic capture to document example designs and new product test boards.

  11. Review customer board designs for conformity with Holt design recommendations.

  12. Write application notes, quick start guides and demo code for product devices.

The main skills required are:

  1. Analog design experience over a range of circuit functions.

  2. Digital design experience, preferably including familiarity with Verilog or VHDL.

  3. High and low level software. Strong experience with C/C++ and some assembly language would be a significant advantage.

  4. Knowledge of integrated circuit measurement methods for evaluation, verification, debug and investigation, in both laboratory and production environments.

  5. The ability to be self-directing or work in a team as required.

  6. Knowledge of IC design and manufacturing and test processes is an advantage.

  7. Develop new IC evaluation boards and example software capable of demonstrating a new Holt IC device.

  8. Experience with any of the following software would be advantageous: Subversion SVN, embedded Linux, Wind River VxWorks or writing test files for RTCA DO-254 airborne hardware design assurance guidelines.

  9. Python scripting language experience is a plus.

Minimum qualifications include:

  1. BSEE and 5 years related work experience; or Master's Degree and 3 years of related experience.

  2. Minimum 3 years of recent hands-on experience testing and integration of embedded systems hardware based on microcontrollers or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).

  3. Strong understanding of integrated development environments for microcontrollers including C

  4. software editing, compilation and debug experience.

  5. Experience with Verilog and/or familiarity with VHDL design methods for FPGA devices.

  6. Strong experience with C or C++ programming languages, as well as schematic capture programs such as OrCAD Capture.

  7. Effective verbal and written English skills required. Must be comfortable preparing and presenting data and reports for both internal staff and external customers.

  8. Must be employable and currently living in the United States. U.S. citizenship or pre-existing green card is required.
